Foreshortening in drawing

Composition
When it comes to composition this piece is very direct and to the point. We already know our focal point is one punch man and the lines of action point to the fist he is about to throw at us. But there arre several subtle effects going on that create this illusion of depth. The obvious one is that the hand is breaking out of the composition, what is not so obvious at first glance is that the hand is also the most illuminated part of his body.  If we were to take the image and make it black and white we would see that the lightest part is the arm leading up to the hand.

Whats interesting to note is in the drawing workout on Schoolism Iain McCaig has this exercise where he tries to show you alll the ways you can lead the eye around the page. The exercise starts with making 8 circles and then drawing something different in each one trying to draw attention through contrast or detail to each new circle you draw. I feel like this would be a good example of this. For instance Iain says that we always look at the first first just out of instinct and I would say that is true here, however what also competes for our attention is the hands which both contrast each other in size and level of detail. So we may see the top hand first but the lines in the piece all point to his fist.

Foreshortening and Perspective
Above we can see a breakdown of the major shapes that form the foreshortened character.  Its interesting to note that the circular shapes on his belt and holding down his cape are pointed all in the same orientation and can give us a good idea of what the overall perspective of the figure is. Notice they also contrast in direction with the main shape of the arm coming out towards us. Notice also the hips and shoulder are pointed in the same direction. Slightly up and to the right, vs the arm is coming out to the left.

The fingers on the hand have the biggest hierarchical position in the perspective because they would be the closest to us so if we are seeing the palm of the hand in a drawing we are also more than likely seeing the bottom plane of the fingertip as well.

Flow
In red I've traced out all the main lines of flow and action throughout the pose. If you pay attention closely we can see the pinch is on the left side of the body and the stretch is on the right, although it is not drastic.  The motion of the head leans in the same direction as the line of action that leads to the front hand. Its also important to notice the lines of the cap that flow into the character . Again the stretched portion of the body points in the direction towards the hand. Interesting enough this line could be seen as a continuation of the line of his inner leg that is outstretched.
