Spawn cover analysis

Composition and value

The composition shot has us looking up at the lumbering figure of Spawn and we can see the details of his body emerging out of the shadows of the cape. I really like how we are so close that th moon shape, a common trope in spawn covers is cut off and exists in a high key value range while the foreground of our figure has a broader range of values to create contrast with the background and the foreground.

I cant say enough how much I like the way the body dips in and out of the darkness, there is a strong sense of form here but the values can also be simplified to the darkest dar, the two tones of shadow and light for his cape and the full range of greys in his armor. There is a repeating triangular design to the shapes that can be found in the chains, armor and silhouette of the figure including the triangle on his shoulder.

While the illustration is simple the posture, the composition and the value range is striking and grabs your attention the moment you look at it which makes it very effective for cover art.
