tomer Hanuka analysis part 2
Composition
To start we see the most striking element of this piece is the contrast of the straight lines and rectangular shapes with the contrasting diagonal shapes and lines of the light that cuts across both of our focal points of the characters and is noticeably missing from the space inbetween them to keep the emphasis on them.
Any visual elements of interest are kept close to around the faces of both protagonists for example the tv with the horse on it (cool idea!), the books to her left, and the glass in harrison's hands. The darker shapes act as a scaffolding or shelf to place all of these shapes onto and what we see on the bottom of the image is the dark shape of the sofa, harrisons clothes, the piano, the shadow her arm casts, the dark wall on the background all connect together to make one big black shape that frames the characters within it. Harrison is basically framed in the black of the sofa and we can follow this up to her legs which curve upwards and lead us to her face, another high contrast moment.
Its also interesting to note that the shape of the light that hits harrison is shaped differently than the light that hits her. His feels more organic in its shape, the light hitting her is straight and mechanical.
Another nice touch is we really get to see the planes of the head turn as well as the form of the couch, his arm..etc. from the use of light and form. He turns the direction of the light as the form changes very cool.
Color
Briefly going over the colors here i noticed the colors on my ipad and laptop monitor are different so there is a descrepency in the color description. There is a clear warm versus cool color scheme going on here. In the darks he uses dark blue for shadows while the midtones are in shades of grey green and some midtone blue for some of the shadows. The highlights fall into the yellow when they pass across her shirt while remaining light yellow green on her face. The background colors clearly contrast with that since we see a warm light coming in from the background in the form of yellows and orange/reds.
