Tomer Hanuka analysis

Todays analysis again caught my eye at how dynamic of a image this artist was able to create with the perspective shot.

Composition and perspective
The composition and perspective are directly connected we can see this when we try to define what kind of perspective this is. At first I had no idea until I saw the bottom brick and used it as a reference cube for the perspective of the image and I discovered that this image was in 2 point perspective. When you recognize this it becomes easier to see the two figures as being set and displayed in two squares that sit opposite one another.

Here in this analysis breakdown I tried to imagine them as both sitting in two boxes side by side to see the perspective clearly. Now that the perspective is clear we can see that he positions the left box as the bigger box with the figure behind him and further in perspective smaller. Its interesting to note here that he elongates the smaller portion of the leg by a significant degree for it to fit into the space that it fits into.

As we mentioned before these are two boxes pointing in opposite directions so obviously the poses are mirror opposite one another and its important to note that the perspective in the arms of the figures feels like its coming "out" toward us but in actuality is going off to either side of us. Unlike in previous analysis pieces I've done, I do not see a change in direction of the hips and shoulders of any particular figure. Instead they both face the same way in both poses.

In the background and underneath the characters we see the storytelling taking place as our two heroes make it across a platform falling apart underneath them. Around them is simple landscape structures one a green tree and one a building on the right both lean into the picture with their shapes keeping our composition in a triangular shape. Another interesting note is objects of interest on Drake point to our background character such as the machine gun that floats semi in the air pointing to the head of the sidekick character.

The suggestion of perspective is explored fully in the image as we look up and down to see various objects at different perspectives such as the gun shells which contrast with the vast emptiness of the sky. They pop into the air and drift downward changing perspective as they fall. He chooses to lea
ve most of the shells above the gun, suggesting an action of him shooting the gun is taking place as the shot is taken.

Color

Before even color picking this image I knew it would have desaturated oranges in the clothing of the characters and desaturated greens and yellows in the scenary immediately. In fact the whole painting and color scheme is an exercise in exploring a limited color palette

Values
When we look at this as a black and white image we see that clearly the protagonists are the ones hit with the darkest darks and greys where as the backdrop gets significantly lighter. The two characters contrast with one another with drake being in a lighter value for his pants and shirts local color and the darkest spots of his hair and weaponry are prominent. Where as on our sidekick character
is in darker midtones but is also less of a focal point since most of the values blend together while drake is lighter in overall tone thanks to the shirt.

Outside of the characters everything else falls into values that are close together which minimizes the contrast in the background. describes atmosphere accurately and is a creative choice by the artist to keep the foreground and background from competing with one another.
