perspective drawing analysis

This is a breakdown of action piece by Brolo, find his work here.

Perspective in motion

In this first breakdown we can see that the main force is going through the hand in front and the front most knee. The whole body has this front gesture momentum and we can see the hands perspective itself is a great example of how you can use the fingers to show a change in perspective by making them on one side small boxes that are hidden behind slightly bigger boxes and as they get closer to us we see less of the side  of the finger and more of the front plane that now almost faces us completely.

The perspective seems obviously to be 3 point perspective considering that it is distorted and jumping out towards us. We can also see this in the size of the shapes as they move away from us get smalller but all the shapes on the front of his body have a downward slope telling me that this image is in 3 point perspective. If you break the shape of the knee down it feels like its coming toward us but we see it points off to the side and the bottom of the leg seems to actually clip into the top of the leg.

The biggest effect though is the cross like shape of the figure. I came across this recent pic I found online and saw that one way to get an effective dynamic pose is to break the pose down into an x like shape.

I made sure to make note of this in my breakdown with the green highlight showing the X within the figure. When we break it down like this we can get a few ideas about why the image looks so dynamic. For example we can notice that the opposite arm and leg are coming forward while the opposite leg and arm fall towards the back. We could construct this by drawing out an x and thinking of the initial lines as in 3d space.

Lighting

The light source in this piece is simple yet effective, it falls down from the top and we can see all the pllanes in the hand and upper body that fall into the light and this contrasts against the torso which is mostly in shadow. This gives us a strong contrast on the leg with the shadow cutting across the forms helping give shape to them and also make the lighting another component that makes this piece feel dynamic.

This next one is just a quick breakdown of the form I see in this streetfighter pose to see how much the ellipses on the back leg overlap. here they overlap but the overlap is not drastic so it doesnt disappear behind the upper leg. We can also see the egg shape here with the shoulder and hips level and facing the same way although not the same size. The ellipses on his gloves give us an idea of how the ellipses on the arm are positioned.
