miki montllo analysis
Composition.
There are several composition elements shown here in this scene that make what looks like disperse elements work together and the viewpoint makes this cover have a very strong graphic read. Our focal point is obviously our character who is the darkest shape in the image. above his head we see likes from a space ship pointing us downwards towards the character. Below the character we notice this is a reflection and that we are looking through the eyes of this character and we can see his feet, his feet also point us upwards towards our character but they do so almost at different degrees and basically help hold the silhouette in place.
There is a lot of play of scale in this image and the use of negative space is quite beautiful in this piece. There is a strong contrast in scale of the reflection of the building next to the figure and we see the variety of scale when you consider the size of the building on the right is large from our viewpoint and the silhouettes of the other buildings around him go down to medium and small. The spaceship up above though is bigger than all of them and its scale is shown in the orbs of light and how their scale contrasts against the scale of the windows in the houses.
He avoids some tangent errors by lightning the background that is closest to the character. For example the barrel of the gun is almost right up against the building in the background., but he drops it down in value and silhouettes the arm and gun of the man to all fall into the same value grouping together. I think the red gradient across his body also helps this.
The element of visual interest shown here is in the small to medium shapes of the money that is sitting on the water our figure is standing on. The money sitting on the water implies movement as it casts out ripples in the water. This encourages the illusion of it being a reflection and differentiates it from the background it is sitting on, notice the money stats within the silhouette of the building for the most part.
