futuristic city composition analysis
Composition
I picked this piece as a study for a current piece I am working on that takes place in a sci fi setting. The perspective in this image is the first thing to make note of, its not super dramatic but it is in the sense that the forms and shapes move around the page in a interesting way. We see that the perspective is clearly one point with everything coming from the center vanishing point. This center vanishing point can be traced back following the train lines that move out from the horizon line.
The shapes of the buildings and floating structures are pretty unique and were probably first drawn as a box and then carved out of that box. The shapes we see repeating are the column like shapes, the circular shapes around the image and the spherical shape we see in the bottom of the image. Our eye tends to gravitate towards the right of the image because of the contrast between the orange tracks and the train on the tracks itself.
There is a strong sense of scale in the image as we see a variety of different landmarks at different orientations on the landscape such as the row of pillars that go into the background that tell us how far off the train rails are going into the landscape. What really strikes me is that even though its one point perspective it doesn't feel stiff and uninteresting like I see a lot of perspective pieces, instead there is a lot of variety of shapes and even angles of shapes that we see in the space ships floating through the air and even some docking over to the right. This adds a great deal of visual interest and depth to the image.
