Character design analysis #22
Character design notes
Right away we see a common theme in the design of this piece and some really good use of lighting. We see for instance repeating layercaking of shapes in the form of the circles. We can see this from the earrings hanging down from the head of the ghost, to the necklace around the masked figures face and the jewelry on his arms, but we also see this same necklace shape around the figure on the bottom. One could also say the veil is circular as well as the bells themselves being circular although they appear as elliptical to us.
I love the lighting in this piece, its so simple yet so effective. We see for instance the light coming down from above illuminating the figure and as the light hits the ground it bounces back up under the face of the figure on the bottom and gives a creepy lighting to the figure. One could also say that the triangle is a repeating form here, we see for instance the whole figure itself feels triangular with the two portions of the towel hanging downward on either side of the figure. The strings hanging alongside them also provide the feeling of symmetry.
Throughout the design there are pieces of red or blue cloth that help break the design up and keep it from being too boring or symmetrical.
