Character design Analysis #29
The use of spikes in this piece is really interesting to me. For one they are not symmetrically drawn and instead pop out and curve in different directions the bigger they are as an outgrowth from the armor covering his body. Secondly, they contrast against the fluffy shapes of the smoke that curves around the body in a zig zag form moving in front and then behind him as it goes up his body and hovers over his head.
There is a heavy use of blacks throughout the piece pushing each individual spike forward but also grouping some of the other shapes together or creating depth by darkening the crevices of the layers of armor. We can see the use of the layer caking here with the constant exploration of the spike shape in every aspect of this drawing with his right arm being the one with the most individual spikes.
The anatomy is obviously a very distorted and strange setup of figure with the right side of the shoulder and leg feeling much bigger than the left side. The detail though on the left side is much more focused on small shapes of spikes rather than the big shapes on the right.
There is also a nice use of blur on the front most part of the cloud coming out towards us on the bottom of the page which adds a layer of depth. I also noticed that even in the clouds there is a hint of the spike shape thrown in at different parts that help unify the two elements.
